The technology consists of a biosensor that is genetically engineered to recognize a specific pathogen and respond to its presence with the emission of a luminescent signal, which can be detected using a standard luminometer, within a matter of seconds after pathogen contact with the biosensor.
The biosensor comprises B lymphocytes that express aequorin, a calcium-dependent bioluminescent protein, in the cytosol as well as pathogen-specific antibodies on the cell surface.
Binding and cross-linking of the cell-surface antibodies by a specific pathogen triggers an elevation in intracellular calcium ions that causes the bioluminescent protein to emit light. The light is detected by a luminometer.

IBI has developed a powerful and rapid biosensor testing platform.
The BioFlash-Dx™ platform which is in clinical trials, once approved by the FDA, will offer physicians or lab technicians the ability to analyze in a matter of minutes infectious diseases in a simple to use and low cost test. The platform is applicable to a broad range of diagnostics and provides superior results at a lower overall cost than molecular diagnostics. Learn more about Clinical Diagnostics
Additionally the BioFlash-E™ platform offers the rapid and sensitive environmental detection and identification of biological threat agents. Learn more about Environmental Detection
The technology’s intellectual-property is covered by 34 issued patents worldwide.
