IBI Today: Clinical Diagnostics

Today's Environment

Physicians want more rapid tests and improved information to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of patients, particularly in the case of:

Infectious diseases, caused by external microorganism, time to commence treatment is critical. Examples of this include:

  • Hospital acquired infections (e.g., MSRA)
  • Multidrug-resistant Tuberculosis (e.g.MDR-TB)
  • Sexually transmitted infections (e.g., Gonorrhea and Chlamydia),
  • Upper respiratory infections (e.g. Influenza A, RSV)
  • Encephalitis
  • HIV
  • Hepatitis
  • Infections affecting pregnant women (e.g. GBS)
  • Detection and monitoring of antibiotic resistance

Cardiovascular pathologies linked to the heart or blood vessels. Examples of these include:

  • Myocardial infarction (heart attack)
  • Venous thrombosis

Current laboratory methods usually test for a limited number of infectious diseases and cardiovascular pathologies using methods that are laborious and time consuming. More recent advances in genomics and proteomics have resulted in complex instrumentation that is capable of performing large numbers of tests, but at a high overall cost.

IBI Solution

IBI’s approach enables rapid and highly affordable testing for infectious and other human diseases on their BioFlash-Dx™ diagnostics platform.

The BioFlash system leverages a low cost instrument (i.e., BioFlash instrument line) with consumable tests depending on clinical need and delivers results within minutes.

Fact based decision making requires the right information at the right time.

  • In healthcare these clinical decisions are reflected in positive patient and economic outcomes:
  • Lower mortality or disease severity
  • Cost avoidance
  • Decreased LOS; drug cost; cost of isolation
  • In this environment the speed in which the appropriate information can be made available to the clinical team is an essential factor
  • “Speed saves money and lives”

The patented, self-contained system consists of engineered biosensors expressing membrane bound, pathogen-specific antibodies and a calcium sensitive bioluminescent molecule. Cross-linking of the antibodies by even minute amounts of the specific pathogen leads to elevation of intracellular calcium and light emission. The amplified light output is detected using an easy-to-use luminometer.

BioFlash-DXBioFlash-Dx™ is:

  • Fast; TAT < 10 minutes per test
  • Easy to use
  • Cost effective
  • Competitive performance
  • Ideal alternative between molecular
    and culture media
